15th Annual STAR 102.5 Radiothon & Auction raises $163,983 for Children’s Miracle Network

Iowa City, IA (May 24, 2013) — STAR 102.5 KSTZ of Des Moines, Iowa raised $163,983.11 during its 15th Annual Big Ken and Colleen’s Kids Radiothon, held May 23-24, 2013 at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital. All proceeds benefit families who receive care at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Children’s Miracle Network parent Kristina Turnis, mother of Christopher Turnis who was previously featured during the radiothon, said, “We know our stories are not easy to listen to. We know they can be emotionally draining. We know that it would be easy to turn off the radio, but...every single dollar raised helps so much. It truly makes life bearable.”

During this annual two-day event, STAR 102.5 interviews several local Iowa children and families affected by sickness, disease and injury. This year’s new kids included:

  • Jordyn—a 5-year-old Rhabdomyosarcoma Stage IV cancer survivor
  • Bailey—an 8-year-old who was born with Infantile Polycystic Kidney Disease
  • Ceaton—a 13-year-old who was internally decapitated in a dirt bike crash
  • Joseph—a 7-year-old who had a brain tumor and hydrocephalus, or “water on the brain”
  • Mikayla—a 13-year-old recovering from leukemia whose father is fighting MS
  • Yasmine—a little girl who is now blind and suffers from neurofibromatosis

Also new this year, that total dollar amount raised includes nearly $10,000 from Ken & Colleen’s Rockin’ Auction that ended today on star1025.com. The online auction featured exclusive concert experiences, including a package that brought in $3,550 to meet Taylor Swift during her upcoming sold-out show in Des Moines on August 1.

Online donations can be made throughout the Memorial Day holiday weekend at www.star1025.com.

STAR 102.5’s Big Ken and Colleen’s Kids began in 1999 as a fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network and the University of Iowa Hospital. Throughout the past 15 years, more than $3 million has been raised by Central Iowans for the Children’s Miracle Network and the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital with Big Ken and Colleen’s Kids Radiothon.
